Packing guitars:

Here's what I learned from a fellow player. It is a hassle but it works.

1. Go to your local guitar dealer and ask for a shipping box that one of the
Jumbo acoustic Cases came in. Usually the dealer is happy to just give this
to you.

2. When packing your guitar, de-tension the strings (it's going in an
un-pressurized cargo hold) and wrap the headstock in a t-shirt or two. Feel
free to wedge a couple more shirts in the open area of the case where the
headstock sits, to minimize shifting in transit. Make sure the guitar fits
snugly into its HARD shell case (Don't use a padded gig bag for this!). Put a
piece of paper with your name, address and phone INSIDE the case with the
instrument. Tape another label securely on the outside of the case, too.

3. put the case into the box from the dealer. Stuff in crumpled newspaper
between the case and any nooks and crannies to minimize shifting in transit.

4. Seal the box securely with strapping tape. Clearly label the box on both
sides with "Property of: [your name, address and contact phone]". If you're
creative you can fashion a "handle" out of the tape (Don't cut a hole in the
box for the handle of the real case!). to easier carrying through the
airport.
(SAVE the box and newspapers while at your destination -- and bring extra
tape! -- because you'll need it for the return trip!)

5. Insure it if possible. Some airlines will offer their own insurance but
your better bet is a rider on your own homeowners/renters policy that covers
damage in transit.

6. NOTE: As checked baggage, it's less likely that the box will be opened --
but it can happen. Be sure to at least carry some extra tape with you to seal
the box back up if it gets inspected.

7. Go to the American Fed. of Musicians Site and print out the letter that
verifies the agreement between them and TSA for hassle-free instrument
portage. Even if you can't bring it on as carry-on you should still show this
letter to TSA officials if they hassle you about your instrument. It helped
me a couple of weeks ago on a trip.

Good luck. --Beth Hamon
