[HANASHIR:14289] RE: A Milestone

Wow, Ellen that's quite a story. It reminds me of when my hubby and I
were "stuck" in Paris when 9/11 happened here. We freaked, naturally,
but I had the email of people who were in Paris, thanks to this list and
they helped us. It's just a wonderful thing to be "joined" with people
all over, thanks to Adrian's diligence and commitment to this listserve.
Thanks Adrian!

Adrian's post reminded me that I wanted to tell you how this list helped
me recently. It's a nice feel-good story and a reminder of just how
small our world can be. My eldest daughter is spending second semester
of her junior year of college in Sydney, Australia. She became ill
earlier this week and went to the university student health clinic and
was mis-diagnosed AND was given an antibiotic that she ended up having
an allergic reaction to. In desperation, I emailed Aura Lipski Levin
(she is affiliated with www.hebrewsongs.com to which Adrian referred and
lives in Australia, though I didn't know in which city she lived) and
posts to our list and asked for her help in finding a doctor for my
daughter to say. Within hours, she replied to my email and CC'd her
email to a close friend of hers who lives in the same city as my
daughter. Her friend called my daughter and within an hour of that phone
call, Sara was in a taxicab on her way to an appointment with a medical
doctor. All is well, Sara is feeling much better, and Mom (me) is
forever grateful to a cyberspace friend who lives 10,000 miles away!

All the best,
Ellen (and Peter)

Chaverim:

I wanted all of us to know that our online community has grown to over
400
members, representing an incredible diversity of geographic location,
profession, age, religious affiliation, etc, but all sharing a common
interest in the transmission of Jewish heritage through music. We have
songleaders, cantors, rabbis, composers, performers, music educators,
synagogue music committee members and more.

I continue to explore ways to expand the website and list services, with
the
help of some good people. In the coming year, I hope to have some
improvements implemented, working with Daniel Hoffer and others. We are
also
firming up close relationships with other important resources like Robin
Selinger's two great websites www.totshabbat.com and
www.geocities.com/shireinu, and Aura Levin Lipski's www.hebrewsongs.com.

Although this list represents a good cross-section of Jewish
affiliation, I
do think we all should give our thanks to the good folks at the UAHC
(most
especially Gerry Kaye at Olin-Sang-Ruby Union Institute, the good folks
at
the Joint Commission on Synagogue Music and Transcontinental Music
Publishers, and UAHC VP Rabbi Dan Freelander --yes, THAT Dan Freelander
of
Kol B'Seder fame) for their continued support in providing host
facilities
for the list and website. Also to the folks at Shamash who support
UAHC-sponsored e-mail lists and at AIT, the host for UAHC-sponsored web
sites.

This year's Hava Nashira workshop is fast approaching. It looks like
I'll be
missing yet another one (though life can be full of surprises.) To those
who
are going, I hope you will promote this online community and extension
of
that experience. To those who have never been, you ought to put it on
your
life's list of things to do. But whether you are an alumnus of Hava
Nashira
or not, you are a part of this wonderful, vibrant online community which
grew out of Hava Nashira, and has expanded in scope to become a resource
for
the entire Jewish community. And there's room for more expansion. Keep
spreading the word about the list to your colleagues and friends
involved in
Jewish music.

My thanks and kudos to all of you for all the ruach, kavod, chochmah and
dinah you bring to this community. I'm kvelling.

B'vracha,

Adrian
