Just to add to the discussion of musical instruments on airplanes, below
is the response I got from United (I emailed them before we got the
official TSA policy letter). Apparently the size of the instrument is
an issue, so be prepared, just in case.

Dear Ms. Hirsch,
Thank you for emailing United Customer Relations.
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has stated that a
musical instrument may be carried on the aircraft in addition to the one
bag, plus one personal item. The musical instrument, however, must fit
the required dimensions of 45 linear inches as does all carry-on items.
Guitars that do not meet the required dimensions cannot be carried on,
unless you purchase a seat for the guitar.
