Thank you to Cantor Brad Hyman for the background of the Avot/Gevurot
melody. I very much agree with him regarding the value of maintaining at
least this taste of chazanut in our services and would add that I have heard
well-meaning songleaders add guitar accompaniment to Avot/Gevurot much to
its detriment. I have another question, though. Further back than
Katchko's Thesaurus which more or less codified the melody, I had the
impression that Avot/Gevurot (and other prayers) were improvised by the
cantor, based on his knowledge of the nusach appropriate to the time of day
and week.
