Eurovision is absolutely nothing like the Grammys! It features some of the
worst of European music, performed by almost-unknown acts. That said, in among
the mix there are some hits - Dana International was one; 'halleluyah' by Milk
and Honey (won for Israel approx. 1980) is another that you'll know. Also,
Abba won it with 'Waterloo' back in about 1976, and several Irish hits have
come out it. There was a period in the 1990s when it seemed that only Ireland
could win. The UK has also put in some reasonable stuff over the years and a
few successful acts have come out of it. Katrina and the Waves (only famous
internationally for 'Walking on Sunshine') won for us a few years ago.
On that note, this weekend the 4 finalists for the UK entry will be on TV, and
2 of them are written by members of the Jewish community here in London, so
we're hoping that one of them gets selected to represent the country.
And, despite all said above, I'm a complete addict... my US room-mate could not
understand why I needed to stay up till the wee hours in the year that I lived
in Israel so that I could watch it. it has become quite a cult event in its'
tackiness - people have Eurovision parties in the UK!
