I have to put in my two cents here about Carol Boyd Leon's above
mentioned piece. At the Solomon Shechter that I work at, we used "Nakum
Uvaninu" at our 40th anniversary "Song & Dance Festival" a few weeks ago
and it was TERRIFIC. If any of you are looking for a piece upon which
you can expand (I added guitarist and bass to my piano), we had the
house lights off and all the kids entered from the wings with glow
sticks, etc. etc. it's a fabulous piece, and of course, easy to learn,
easy to sing and VERY meaningful. Thanks again Carol for a wonderful
piece.

Uvaninu"
Carol sent the following response privately to my request for music to
sing at the gala benefit honoring two of our congregation members.
Unfortunately she is snowed in and can't get to a fax machine to send me
the sheet music. It is in her life cycles song book. Does anyone out
there have the song book and a fax machine? I would appreciate it if
you could fax "Nakum Uvaninu" to me at (847) 831-1440. I have Carol's
permission, and I am also buying the song book from her so I will have
it for next time.
Thanks for your help.

P.S. Carol also sent me her song "You are my child" to sing at my
daughter's Bat Mitzvah last year. If is a beautiful song. My
recommendation for any parent wanting to sing it to their child is to
practice it a lot before hand in order to be able to get through it
without crying. My daughter loved having me sing it to her because she
knew how much it spoke from my heart (she heard me choking up while I
was practicing). My mother hadn't heard it before and it really meant a
lot to her listening to her child (me) sing to her grandchild (my
daughter). It was one of the very special moments in a day filled with
very special moments. Thanks, Carol!!
Judith,
If you want a lively, rousing, get-'em-clapping-and-dancing kind of song
to
honor volunteers whose efforts helped build and strengthen the
congregation,
may I suggest "Nakum Uvaninu." It's Chassidic in feeling.
The lyrics are:
Va-yom-ru na-kum u-va-ni-nu
va-y'chaz-ku y'de-hem la-to-va.
Va-yom-ru na-kum u-va-ni-nu
va-y'chaz-ku y'de-hem la-to-va.
And they said, "Let us rise up and build."
So they strengthened their hands for this good work.
We have come very far.
"Hineinu! Here we are!"
Let us rise, rise up and build!
Lai lai lai lai lai, "Hineinu!"
Lai lai lai lai lai lai lai lai lai lai.
Lai lai lai lai lai, "Mir zeynen do!"
Lai lai lai lai lai lai lai lai lai lai
It was the CAJE 27 theme song and has since been used for a variety of
different occasions including, most recently, the 40th anniversary
celebration of a day school. I think it would work well to honor 2
people
at once.
