Julia and Rebekah - thanks so much for the post, however delayed since the 
original discussion.

This semester I am in a Parashat HaShavua class at The Academy for Jewish 
Religion in NY (where I am a rabbinical student).  Our class is being led by 
Marla Berkowitz who is deaf since birth. We had a much longer version of this 
discussion in one of our classes as we were learning more about the Jewish deaf 
community.

She helped found an organization called the Jewish Deaf Resource Council - 
their web adress is www.jdrc.org.
