[HANASHIR:13394] RE: FW: [bjeprincipalscouncil] Experience Israel songs

Interesting question! Well I wouldn't include "Hatikvah," because that
is a song that everyone should know anyway, and would be a great way for
the entire community to start the festival. Guess I would do it a
little differently - I would start with something like "Shalom Al
Yisrael," and use the very loose English translation for the verse and
Hebrew for the chorus. That would lead into Sheva's very rhythmic and
percussive "Saalam," which would run into a medley of: "Achshav,"
"Heveinu Shalom Aleichem," "David Melech Yisrael," "Am Yisrael Chai,"
(either or both versions) and end the medley with Debbie's "Im Tirtzu"
(the kids love this). I would then go into Rick Recht's "Yiyeh
Shalom," and end with a very percussive and inclusive "Eretz Zavat
Chalav."

Songs like "Yerushalayim Shel Zahav," "Al Kol Ele," "Eretz, Eretz,
Eretz," are very nice and very beautiful, but most supplemental reform
schools will not have enough time to teach, and these songs will be
quite difficult for the kids. Just too much Hebrew. However, if you
have some kids in day school, or some very talented kids, they might be
able to sing a verse and then the 5th graders could just learn the
choruses for these.

Good luck!

songs

Chaverim:

Our BJE each year has an "Experience Israel" program for all area 5th
grade students. This year, they are revamping the format. One activity
they are planning is s a massive song session, and they are asking each
congregation to help teach the songs to their students in advance.

The solicited input for songs, but I'd like to open this up to this
great circle of Jewish Music professionals for their input. We're
basically looking for the top five songs to teach. Fell free to look
over the list the BJE already garnered, or add your own. Hopefully this
list can come to a consensus which I can then present to the folks at
the BJE for their consideration. The deadline is February 7th.

This could be an interesting discussion on the list as well as off, so
it's up to you whether to respond to me privately or on the list. (I
guess that's one of the privileges of my being the list owner!)

Shabbat Shalom,

Adrian

A few weeks ago I sent out an e-mail requesting the names of some
possible
songs to teach the 5th graders for Experience Israel. The following is
a
listing of what I received. Please select five songs that you think the
5th
graders should learn and whichever receives the most votes-wins! I'd
like
the polling to be completed by February 7 so that there's ample time to
make
a tape and distribute it to your schools.
Thanks.
