Sorry for my delay on this thread, been busy at work. I don;t know if anyone
threw this out yet but there is a very diferent tone that comes from a thumb
pick vs. and flat pick. Although I can imitate the flat picking technique
with a thumb pick but the tone is not the same. I once heard a great trick
from Nancy Griffith. She glues a flat pick to a thumb pick. I have no control
with a flat pick but with this technique I can control the destination of the
pick on the string because for me my thimb is what works, and still get that
flat picking sound using my thumb where I have the control. I would not use
this for songleading because there are enough changes happening with capos
etc. between songs, but it does lend itself to certain songs in performance.
You have to experiment alittle to find the placement where you're
comfortable. You;ll need a half a dozen thumb picks, flat picks and some
crazy glue to find that out.
