I love this topic!  Having begun my musical life playing classical guitar, I 
have always used my own fingernails for fingerpicking...for all my life, 
growing the right hand nails a little longer than the left.  I only have one 
product to recommend: 

Sally Hansen Hard as Nails nailpolish.  

You will probably always see me playing with polished nails.  I find I am 
much more likely to break a nail while strumming than fingerpicking.

By the way, I have always used the rounded part of the flat pick to strum, 
and someone recently told me I was doing it wrong...that you're "supposed" to 
use the pointy edge!
