[HANASHIR:12826] Debbie's "Im Ein Ani Li Mi Li"

Debbie wrote two songs (at least, to my knowledge) with this theme. One is
the campy version on NFTY at 40 and "If Not Now, When," one of Debbie's
earlier (1980) albums. The other version was originally recorded on a
little-known, but recently re-released Behrman House album Debbie Friedman's
Musical Curriculum for HEBREW & HERITAGE (yes, that's vinyl, baby!) that had
a bunch of priceless songs from Debbie, including "In The Classroom
(Bakitah)," "Im Ein Ani Li - Hillel's Song" and a few others that have
gotten me out of a jam while teaching more times than I care to remember.
This album was re-named The Aleph-Bet, is available on her website or
through Sounds Write, and I'm not certain but based on some of the rm clips
on the site... I think (forgive me if I'm wrong) these songs were also
re-recorded for this album. The new versions of this stuff lack that yummy
"Debbie in the 1970's-early '80's" sound that some of us purists crave.
Don't get me wrong... I'll take a "live" Debbie Friedman interaction over a
recorded track any day, but the 1970's analog sound is soothing for a lot of
reasons. In fact, not to spark a debate, but I think Debbie is even
returning to some of her earlier recording techniques when putting out new
things. Multi-tracked harmonies with herself, more reverb, and simple (but
brilliant) arrangements are definitely the way I like to listen to Debbie
Friedman.
