[HANASHIR:12405] Re: Neil's Adon Olam request...

Hey Neil! And hey to anyone else who might be interested in playing this
version of Adon Olam...

It's quite a fun tune! Here's my attempt at picking out the chords for it by
ear...

Adon Olam -- by Aminadav Aloni (notated here by Angela Gold)
_____________________________________________________

I used my recording from Hava Nashira to hear the chords.
They put the capo on the 5th fret.
Here are a few other details to know about the way I notated this:

1. Each chord has been inserted just before the syllable that is on the beat
it corresponds to. I did it this way so that no matter what font people's
computers are using to open this email, the chords appear in the right places
for the song (unlike when you put the chords above the words and everything
gets offset after passing through the guts of the internet) Some chords
stand by themselves; this is because they still come in on the beat but there
are no words sung with them.

2. If you see three hyphens after a word or syllable, it is because the word
is drawn out (perhaps for longer than one might anticipate) when sung.

3. If you see three periods after a word or syllable, it stands for a
fermata (pregnant pause).

4. The Am chords in the 1st and 3rd line of the chorus can be played just as
Am, or you may wish to add a walkdown on the low E string (0-3-2-1) the way
they did it on my recording.

5. The B7 chord is slightly different in the last verse than it is in the
rest of the song. I put an asterisk there to note that it's different.
While I am good at matching notes and chord combinations by ear, I do not
know the names of many of the more obscure chords, but I can hear that it is
played with an extra high note added (diminished 3rd? I dunno... would a
music theorist please chime in here?); here's the combination (from low E to
high e): 224245 (may be less awkward if you just play the top 4 notes --
4245)

6. As much as this chord notation may help you with playing the song, you
will still need to listen to the recording to get the melody down. It's not
the easiest or most user-friendly melody, but once you get it, it sure is
catchy!

7. I have no idea why the last verse is missing, but I am just notating
exactly what is on my recording (and no, the verse wasn't cut off by my
recorder). It works just fine with the tune, so you could certainly add it
in if you wish...
