Chevrei -
This message is in no way intended to bad-mouth Cedar Lake or offend anyone
associated with it, but I felt it would be irresponsible not to inform you
of the following caveats.
I accepted the songleader job for this camp 7 years ago, only to find that
the music program althogether, let alone the *Jewish* music program, was
barely on its feet. Song sessions were only a couple times a week, and they
were purely secular in nature - from Indigo Girls to "American Pie". Even
worse, I wasn't told until it was already too late that *every* staff
member - even specialists - are also counselors. All summer I lived in a
bunk with extremely rambunctious and not very respectful 14 year-old boys.
Needless to say, I did not return the following summer after having that
very unfulfilling experience. (I should add, though, that the staff I worked
with was very nice. Many of them were from England, Australia, and the like,
and it was fun getting to know them.)
I'm not saying that this is how it is at the camp now. A heck of a lot can
change in 7 years, and the director who sent this original email is
different then the director back then. Just wanted to warn anyone interested
in applying to make sure they ask the right questions about how strong the
camp music program is, what the campers should be expected to handle, and
what *exactly* their job description will be.
Best of luck and shanah tovah.
- Eric
