[HANASHIR:11731] Hallelu Avdey Adonai lyrics

Neil Weinstein recently emailed the list asking for lyrics to the song
Hallelu Avdey Adonai, which someone shared at one of the Hava Nashira
lunctime shira sessions. (Please forgive me, I can't remember the name of
the woman who shared the song, but she did a great job).

When I returned home from Hava Nashira, I had listened to a recording I have
called Tuning the Soul by Richard Kaplan and Michael Ziegler. It is a
wonderful collection of songs from the traditions of Ashkenazi (European),
Mizrachi (Middle Eastern), North African, and Sephardi (Spanish/Andalusian)
Jewish communities. And it includes the song requested by Neil.
Unfortunately, the CD insert does not include the lyrics, so I emailed
Richard Kaplan, requested them, and also asked if I could post them to this
list. He generously agreed and explained a little about the song. Here's
what he said:

"Yes, please do/feel free to share the lyrics. They are from the Iraqi
Jewish community and are used there for the Hakafot on Simkhat Torah. We use
the song for different parts of Shabbat services as well. They are wonderful
for Pesukey d'Zimra and for the end of Friday night services. Michael and I
davvened it with 800 people at the 1997 Jewish Renewal Aleph Kallah in Fort
Collins, Colorado. Sinai!!"

You can order the Tuning the Soul Cd from either soundswrite.com or
jewishmusic.com. If you liked this song at Hava Nashira and you think you
want to share it with others, please consider ordering the CD. I think it is
vitally important for us to support the artists who are sharing these great
songs with us.

The song is a lot of fun to sing. It is a bit of a tongue twister, though
with practice, I'm sure it can be learned. It gets faster and it also
modulates several times on the recording. On the CD insert, it says that the
song follows an alphabetical acrostic, and enumerates divine attributes of
the Holy One: "Blessed of the Blessed," "Ancient of the Ancients,"
"Righteous of the Righteous." The refrain is taken from the opening line of
Psalm 113.
