although i was only using the "sulzer shema" for
illustration purposes, Jeff is correct: the sulzer
shema we sing was lifted from his torah service (btw,
the torah service sulzer wrote is quite lovely,
although no one really sings it accurately any
more--chaval). however, the melody for the line,
"shema yisraeil" i believe is in tact. the question
is, as judah points out, when it was actually used for
k'riat shema. considering that in traditional judaism,
the focus of the service is the t'fillah and not the
shema, and that reform put the focus on creed (the
watchword of our faith, as it were), it would seem
that some reformer or another put such a focus on the
singing of the line, "shema yisrael."
