Chevrei --
I just came across a great opportunity for many of us to market ourselves. On
Sunday, June 9th, there will be 25000+ people attending the Israel Independence
Day Festival here in Boston
(http://www.jcrcboston.org/israelindependenceday.htm). I will be leading "Rock
Yisrael: An Israel Songfest" in the Beit Midrash tent, Yom Hadash will be
performing on the Main Stage in the afternoon, and it's all but certain that the
headlining act from Israel will be Esta and Rami Kleinstein (you have to get
Esta's album just to hear their version of U2's "I Still Haven't Found What I'm
Looking For" -- Rami sings lead).
One of the features of this event will be a Israeli style "shuk" where artists
and vendors can sell their product. So I figured -- why not us? This would be
a great opportunity to market your music to a wide audience in a community with
a rich tradition of Jewish music.
The cost of a table at the IID "shuk" is $118 (also check here for more info:
www.meltzerworld.net/IIDShukInfo.doc) If a number of us chipped in, we could
have a communal Hanahir/Hava Nashira table to sell CDs and other goodies from
members of our community. You could either send me some CDs or other items for
sale (on consignment), give them me at Hava Nashira, or -- if you live in the
Boston area -- give me a buzz and I'll pick them up. Since we are not permitted
to play the music out loud (so as not interfere with the performances nearby), I
would provide a listening booth (portable CD and tape players) for potential
customers to listen to your music. This could also be great opportunity to
solicit performances in the Boston area as well . . . so sending booking
information would also be a good idea.
This concept could very well work in other cities and communities for other
festival style events and conventions. Two ideas that come to mind are the
Greater Chicago Jewish Folk Arts Festival (www.pocet.org) June 16th or the
Atlanta Jewish Festival on August 25th. Volunteers from each area could staff
the Hava Nashira 'Store'.
The deadline for table has technically passed, but I have already been in
contact with the person at the JCC who's in charge of the "shuk", so I've got a
brief extension. I'm leaving for Chicago on Sunday before heading to Hava
Nashira, so I'd like to know by Saturday if anyone is interested in such a
venture. The cost person for the table will depend on how many people join in
on this venture. If anyone in the Boston area would like to help staff such a
table, give me a call.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.
