Ellen,
I see someone already answered your specific question, but as a general rule, 
in Hebrew transliteration there are five vowels which consistently make the 
same sounds - pretty much the same as the romantic languages - 
A is always ah as in shalom or father
E is always eh as in bed , ya-aseh
(ey or ei would be used if it's pronounced "ay" like neighbor or ein 
kamocha...)
I is always "ee" as in jeep or mi kamocha
O is always "oh" as in shalom or tov
U is a long u as in Adir Hu,
