Isn't it odd.

        If you are a member, you can join the choir and sing at services.
        If you are a talented singer, non-Jewish, you can be paid to sing in 
the 
choir.
        If you are a talented singer, Jewish, you are not paid to sing in the 
choir.
        If you are a talented singer, becoming Jewish, becoming a member, but 
not 
yet either, you may be told you are not allowed to be in the choir.
        On the other hand, if as a talented singer, becoming Jewish, becoming a 
member (but not yet), you join the volunteer choir, you may find kavanah, 
and thus want more to be Jewish and more to be a member...
