The short answer is-we shouldn't be singing it the same way. when this
discussion has come up on other lists, my ultimate statement has been that,
regardless of the variances, if the intent is to be singing the Israeli
national anthem, then it must be sung as officially promulgated by the
Israeli government, which is with the "haTikvah BAT sh'not alpayim" and ends
with the words "VIrushalyim" and which has a distinct rhythmic pattern for
be-ar-tsei-nu.

The fact is that the song originally had some different lyrics, which were
changed over time. Remember that the song predates medinat Israel. There are
also some apocryphal stories about mistakes in the published US versions.
And there's more history which I haven't the time to go into now as work is
progressing, but perhaps Judah or another music historian can relay to the
list.
