[HANASHIR:10987] Info on Copyright

Chaverim:

For a good refresher course on copyright, I reiterate this rather useful
link from the Church Music Publishers association.

http://www.cmpamusic.org/html/main.isx?sub=17#8

I think it sheds light on some of the common misunderstandings about
copyright, and emphasizes the point I continue to make-people should
just take the time to get permission first!

Fair use is generally not applicable to religious institutions. The only
exception that US copyright law makes for religious institutions is that
it permits the performance of a copyrighted work written for religious
purposes in a service or other religious assembly without permission.
Performing is one thing. The printed page is another matter entirely.

Now, if only the Jewish music world had a copyright clearing house like
the church world does, things could be a lot easier for all of us. I've
been lobbying to get one started for years. Anyone at Transcon,
Soundswrite, Tara interested?

B'vracha
