Adrian,

Perhaps there is a violation of copyright law. If you want to look at this
entire endeavor through a 'legal' lens.  There are other ways of looking at
things - whereby you might ask yourself if the overall benefits outweigh the
detriments. For example - -

Several years ago I was the music teacher at another synagogue (not where I
teach now, which is Westchester Reform Temple), and I wanted to put together
a Shiron, a songbook for the Hebrew school.  Simply to copy all the lyrics
of the songs we teach during the year and put them in a binder.  Guess
what - the Rabbi "vetoed" that project because of copyright violation.
Legally he had all the "right" reasons why NOT to do this.

So instead of having a nice Shiron that the children can hold and treat
respectfully - we were reduced to loose photocopies that ended up crumpled
up, if not as paper airplanes...So in the end it all came down to
*binding*!!  It was OK to make loose copies of a song, but NOT OK to bind
them together into a shiron, even if it was strictly for educational
purposes, and not for sale or profit.

Isn't this absurd??  And who lost?  The kids, of course.  Do you think the
composers of the songs we ended up NOT teaching because distributing loose
sheets takes up half the time allocated to music "won" a legal, or financial
victory?  The rabbi was convinced he was doing "the right thing" - but I
believe that it was pure "lose-lose" for everyone. Mostly the composers...

My point is that before we get too caught up in a legal "plonter" (a knot,
in Yiddish) - we should survey the "big picture" and determine if anyone
really "looses" anything, thereby justifying  aggressive law enforcement. In
other words - do we want to "win the battle but lose the war", when it comes
to educating children and spreading Jewish culture throughout the world.
