[HANASHIR:10923] Re: Mizmor Shir

I've also been curious who composed that tune since I learned it in '68. I
haven't been able to find out - the only info I have is that it was recorded
(in 67 ?) by 'Parvarim', the wonderful folk duo from Israel (their later
album of Hebrew covers of Simon and Garfunkel songs is a classic) and the
version we use was taken straight from the recording. The record label, as
I recall, listed no author. My guess is the tune was one of the early
neo-Chassidic melodies which were to become the hit trend in Israel starting
in 1968. It seems that these peppy tunes with Biblical and prayer themes
were the perfect follow-up to the '67 War and the re-unification of
Jerusalem. Shlomo Carlebach's music was a major inspiration for the deluge
of Chassidic hits which poured out of Israel throughout the early70's. To
mention just a few songs, Al Shl'losha, Shema, Shehecheyanu, Yedid Nefesh,
V'haeir Eineinu, and the 'fast' Adon Olam, all came out of Israel's
Chassidic Song Festival at that time. So put Anonymous down as the
composer. Clearly the song has been a huge influence on the music that
followed it.
