[HANASHIR:10885] Re: Adon Olam Tunes

It was interesting to read Shirona's reaction to Adon Olam being sung to 'Rock
around the clock'. It is precisely because the words attempt to 'define' God
that this poem has the history, re: music, that it does. Some Jews, on
priciple, disapprove of the content - how can we mere mortals even come close
to defining God? - they would argue. And yet, there is no denying the beauty
of many of those words.

So, partly in response to these strongly-held views, some people have written
beautiful, moving melodies to enhance the words, while others have applied fun
and playful music, emphasising that they don't take the meaning of the words
too seriously. You may notice in some congregations that some people are
already packing up their Tallitot during Adon Olam. It's not only because they
are eager to get to the kiddush quickly, but because some Jews are consciously
not engaging deeply with the words of Adon Olam because it does not lie easily
with their theology.
