Ellen,
We have had a songbook of lyrics for the past two years at our synagogue.   
We have put in the transliterations and English texts for all of the songs we 
frequently sing at Shabbat Services.  I also include the composer of the song 
next to the Song title.  Because of the copyright infringements involved, I 
did not include copies of the music itself.  From the bimah I see people 
using them all of the time, and some of the congregants have asked to take 
them home so they can get to know the words better.  I have just recently 
added 25 new copies to replenish those taken by congregants.  Also, as we add 
new songs to the service, I add them to the songbooks.
