[HANASHIR:10524] Re: amazing flying guitars

I, too am traveling this week with a guitar, but the
smaller "travel" size (Tacoma Papoose) will allow me
to bring it into the cabin with me. Large guitars are
now mostly required to be checked by the airlines,
most of whom are setting the limit at something like
45 linear inches (that's combined width, length and
depth, not generous enough for a full-size guitar).

For checked baggage, the case should be more than
"strong", and you should deifinitely look into some
kind of additional insurance for the instrument,
against both damage AND theft (since the "unusual"
case may also make it an easier mark for thieves). In
the future, if money's no object you may have to
resort to buying it a seat and strapping it in, like
cello players do.

Also -- FYI for the list -- Anvil Corporation makes
the heaviest-duty cases I've ever seen. Full Metal
Jacket with form-fitting foam inside to prevent ANY
movement whatsoever. Gorillas could almost play
hoppity-hop on these, they're that strong. They're
also crazy-expensive but cheaper than replacing the
guitar. And they're HEAVY, which means that thieves
can't get as far as fast. Any large music store can
help you custom-order one.

Hope this helps. Travel safely --Beth Hamon
