[HANASHIR:10454] Re: in general--accents

Bravo!!! I totally agree about writing songs or teaching songs that respect
the pronunciation of Hebrew as Hebrew -there are of course the exceptions of
Chaim Nachman Bialik or those writers/poets who purposely used the Ashkenazic
form. It has been a pet peeve of mine for 30 years. In 1970 I had to pass a
VAD in Israel in order to record for Kol Yisrael - and studied voice and
diction there. When I sing Hebrew I am believable!
Articulation is really important and we are doing a great disservice when we
dismiss the proper pronunciation for the sake of a rhyme.
That was one of the things that I also had to focus on in writing songs for
A.R.E.(Z"Man LaShir: Time to Sing Hebrew) that not only taught a core oral
Hebrew vocabulary, but the notes and syllables corresponded instantly to
clear Hebrew whether spoken or sung. As well, when I worked as Music Producer
for the Tal Sela Hebrew Language Arts curriculum (26 cassettes) teaching
Hebrew through Hebrew for the day school population, I had rigorous
guidelines from the master teachers of Hebrew. That programme is one of the
most successful ones out there (Covenant award-winning)
