Be careful with this stuff.  It's fun to conjecture about, but there is, to
the best of my knowledge, nothing but the most general and sketchy of
information on what these signs actually were--if there actually was a
system of hand signs for trope in the first place.  (Usually they're
discussed as "guiding the reader" through the Torah section.  This may be
little more than when to raise and lower the voice, plus a sign for
stopping.  But now I'm conjecturing as well. . .).   Oh, would that the
myths we create about Jewish music were true. . .  More often they're a
reflection of the way we think today then they are of "the way things really
were."
