Chevre:  when my kids were in hs they belonged to this internationally known
youth orchestra called the "Empire State Youth Orchestra" which as played at
Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and has also toured Europe.   They both were
principal tpt players (my daughter the first 3 years and then after she
graduated my son took her chair)... Anyway, being a music educator, I got
involved.   Little by little my involvement grew and our big fundraiser each
year is this gig called the "Melodies of Christmas" which benefits the
Albany Medical Center Childrens' Cancer Unit.  Over the past 20 years we
have raised over $4 million for the Center.   It is televised, etc.   Each
night of the show there are almost 3000 people in the seats.   5 shows.
Anyway about 5 years back we decided to get a little more open in our
programming and I contacted Josh Jacobson and he gave us the rights to
perform some of his "showstoppers."   I ended up coaching the youth chorale
(about 100 voices) and we sang "Drey Dreidelach" amongst others.   We also
brought in a klezmer band and needless to say this jewish music rocked the
house - everyone was up (in their Santa sweaters) in the aisles dancing,
etc.   Talk about ruach -- they now call me their "jewish music expert" and
ps, I've grown from parent volunteer to Artistic Chair, this coming year I'm
going to be vice president of the organization and the following year,
president.     It's amazing where our jewish music can take us!  Thanks to
all of us!
