[HANASHIR:8724] A request for your opinion

Friends: The following request is designed to find out from
the many gifted intellects who are part of this list, some comments
on a specific topic. I do request that you send your reply ONLY to me
via the e-mail address above. I promise to provide a summary of all
of the answers to anyone who responds. Please note that this request
is not for the purpose of research for a new book or article.
The question has resulted from recent articles in "Reform
Judaism" and other publications which are discussing Synagogue 2000.
The objective is to re-invigorate the synagogue as a center of Jewish
life and activity. However, those who have created the concept have
not clearly defined just what the purpose of a synagogue is. Since
many of those in this discussion group are involved in the creation,
performance, and study of music for the synagogue and its adjunct
activities, a consideration of the purpose of the institution might
be in order.
I begin with the understood purpose that the synagogue is "a
house of prayer, and a house of study". Using these two premises, I
would be interested in two or three additional suggestions per
respondant.
Again, please respond PRIVATELY and NOT to the entire list.
                B'shalom, Burton Zipser
