I agree with Dropkin. In more traditional settings (or for my father), I
find it neccessary to "retro-fit" the song to sing "Hashem" instead of
"Adonai." If the song doesn't work that way, I don't perform it.
Interestingly, although I almost always write songs using Adonai -- i've
written 2 with Hashem simply because 2 syllables fit better than 3. Also
the sound of "A-do-nai" lends itself to a longer, perhaps more majestic
sound, while "Hashem" works nicely with a more clipped melody. This is
music, folks, not Talmud.
As Andy suggested, all these names are just euphemisms for a Divine
Presense which has no pronouncible name.
