Hi! I am fairly new to this list but have already learned a lot from
all of you. I am not, by any stretch of the imagination, a
professional musician. I am the director of the religious school of
our tiny congregation here in western South Dakota. I teach as well
and am also trying to be the music teacher. I do like to sing and
feel that music is such a good medium for teaching and such an
enjoyable part of Judaism to share with the kids. I also try to
teach new (and old) songs to the rest of the congregation, although
in a very informal way. I was thinking that attending Hava Nashira
might be a very good learning experience for me but was wondering if
I would maybe not fit in with the level of music that others are
doing there. Tonight I looked at the brochure on the OSRUI website.
The information given indicates that one must be proficient playing a
musical instrument as well. I can pick out a tune on the piano or
keyboard but I am not able to accompany anyone singing--and trying to
play and sing myself is a total impossibility.
Can someone who has attended this before give me an idea? I would
love to have this sort of experience but would prefer to know if I
wouldn't really belong there. In any case, I'll continue to glean
ideas from this list!
Thanks in advance.
Jo Benn
