Donna, Your sentiments are exactly the reason that I spend as much time per
week as I do, getting my playlists for the radio show together.
Don't forget, you can hear nusach 24 hours a day on the nusach internet
radio network.....
if you have anything you would like to hear, or contribute to the enjoyment
of others, please send email to me at
nusach (at) hotmail(dot)com and I will let you know where to send the cd or
tape. If
there are requests for specific nusach or cantors, I will try to put them on
the 24 hour station and play them on our live broadcasts. I am happy to see
this discussion, especially the above comments. While I enjoy listening and
using modern melody in the service, I fear the loss of such great music of
the past. As you said, use it or loose it really applies. Once in a while,
I will pull out some nusach from my youth and the members of the
congregation invariatebly (sp?) come up to me and tell me that they have not
heard that in 50 years. I cringe at pesach to hear this when I do Tal
because it means that chazzanim are not using the nusach, but rather are
either just doing something else or ignoring it. Nusach is supposed to set
the tone and mood of the service. Nusach gets you in the mood. The network
stations are an attempt to expose people to the nusach of the past, while
entertaining at the same time.
