With Apologies to Joyce Kilmer. This is from Marie Jaffee's delightful,
delicious and daring collection of original poems titled Gut Yontif Gut
Yohr: A Collection in Yiddish of original Holiday verses and popular
English classics in Translation. Please do me a favor, though, don't go
putting Di Nacht Far Chritmas on your curriculum. But, your kids might
get a kick out of Trees ( Just in time for Tu Bishvat) or Ven Irishe
Oygn Shmeichlen ( Around St. Paddy's Day) A little Yiddish never hurt,
and can be a lot of fun, not to mention educational. By the way, a lot
of "traditional" holiday songs can be either found in Yiddish
transliteration or can be done in Yiddish. It would make something old
new again, and lots of fun for the kids.
