[HANASHIR:8022] Re: Great song for Tu Bishvat

As long as you're posting "secular" songs for Tu B'Shevat, please let me
recommend "Rattlin' Bog", a song about a tree in a bog. Like "The Green
Grass Grows All Around" which you mentioned, Meris, it is a cumulative song
which kids AND adults simply love. The challenge of remembering each of the
previous verses when you are adding a new verse appeals to all, young and
old. And they both lend themselves to using hand motions, too, another plus
with young kids.

You can find both "Rattlin' Bog" and "The Green Grass Grows All Around" in
any collection of old-timey songs....most public libraries have those types
of songbooks. Or if you're interested, Peter and I recorded "The Rattlin'
Bog" on our secular recording called GOOD KID, just released this past
November. GOOD KID also has a song called "Count Your Blessings" which we
will be recording on our next Jewish recording as well and I think is good
for all times of the Jewish (and secular) year. We were thrilled to know
that Judy Caplan Ginsburgh has performed it in some of her recent concerts.

Here are the words to both songs, just fyi (you can hear MP3 samples at our
website http:www.PeterandEllen.com):

Rattlin¹ Bog
Traditional

Chorus:
Hi ho, the rattlin bog, the bog down in the valley oh
Hi ho, the rattlin bog, the bog down in the valley oh.

In that bog there was a tree, a rare tree and a rattlin' tree
the tree in the bog....the bog down in the valley oh. Chorus

On that tree, there was a branch, a rare branch and a rattlin branch......
the branch on the tree, the tree in the bog, the bog down in the valley oh.
Chorus

On that branch.....a twig
On that twig.....a nest
In that nest...an egg
In that egg....a bird
On that bird...a feather
On that feather.....a flea

Count Your Blessings
©1999 Peter & Ellen Allard

Chorus:
You can count your blessings, 1-2-3
When you count your blessings, you will see
That the world is a wonderful place to be
When you count your blessings, 1-2-3.

Blessings come in all shapes and all sizes
Sometimes you can¹t even tell
When you least expect it, you suddenly find that your life is going very
well. Chorus

Everything happens with meaning and purpose
Each of us finds our own way
When you keep your eyes open, you¹ll see that your life is a miracle
each & every day. Chorus

Bridge:
Please remember to count yourself, you¹re a blessing too
You bring joy to others, don¹t you know it¹s true?

Chorus

GOOD LUCK!.....Ellen

I actually thought of another TuB'shevat song...... it's kind of a
stretch.... now dig back into your memories......... "There was a tree
(echo)..... (sol do re me ......)That had a branch (echo), the prettiest
little branch (echo) that you ever did see! (echo) etc. etc. And the green
grass grows all around all around, and the green grass grows all around.
It's one of those chain songs where you keep adding to the verse....... just
a thought.

Just thought of a GREAT song for Tu Bishvat, ( got very excited about it )
and took the trouble to type up the lyrics to share with you all. It's the
theme song from the Disney film Pocahontas. If you never saw the film and
don't know the song - it's worth renting just for that.

Colors Of The Wind

Music by Alan Menken

Lyrics by Stephen Schwartz

You think you own whatever land you land on

The Earth is just a dead thing you can claim

But I know every rock and tree and creature

Has a life, has a spirit, has a name.

You think the only people who are people

Are the people who look and think like you

But if you walk the footsteps of a stranger,

Youll learn things you never knew you never knew.

Chorus:

Have you ever heard the Wolf cry to the Blue Corn Moon,

Or asked the grinning Bobcat why he grinned? (1st time)

Or let the Eagle tell you where hes been? (2nd time)

Can you sing with all the voices of the mountain,

Can you paint with all the colors of the wind?

Can you paint with all the colors of the wind?

Come run the hidden Pine-trails of the forest,

Come taste the Sun-sweet berries of the earth

Come roll in all the riches all around you

And for once never wonder what theyre worth.

The rainstorm and the river are my brothers,

The Heron and the Otter are my friends,

And we are all connected to each other

In a circle, in a hoop that never ends.

Chorus #2

How high does the Sycamore grow?

If you cut it down then youll never know

And youll never hear the Wolf cry to the Blue Corn Moon,

For whether we are white or copper skinned

We need to sing with all the voices of the mountain,

We need to paint with all the colors of the wind

You can own the earth and still

All youll own is earth until

You can paint with all the colors of the wind
