[HANASHIR:7979] Re: Percussion usage

Hi Ron,

I am in San Diego and am part of the RockNShabbat program we do at Beth Am.
There is a percussionist as well as upright bass, piano, guitars, vocals,
cello, and flutes/saxophones. I am pretty sure that Craig Taubman's band has
a percussionist as well in his Friday NIght Live service. It is done, but
should be used very carefully to enhance the spirituality of the music
instead of destroy it. That can be a very fine line during services. I also
have a 9 piece teen band that leads services but we don't use any percussion
and there doesn't seem to be any lack of pulse, beat, or rhythm. When a
congregation is really into the music, the best percussion sometimes is their
clapping along which brings can bring an elevating connection to everyone in
the room. I hope this helps.

Shalom,

Craig Parks
