[HANASHIR:7921] Re: Guitar-led service in Israel prevented

I assume I am meant to answer this (my name is Adam, not Andy). Anyways,
thanks to all for your responses. The issue of whether or not to discuss
the situation with the management was not my decision to make. The Hillel
staff decided that it was in our best interest to continue without the
guitar. I spoke with many of the Hillel people afterwards, and it was my
understanding that they had used a guitar at the same hotel a week earlier
without a problem, and that none of the other hotels (Rick's included) had
any problems.

The more I learn and study the issues of religious pluralism and the
relationship between Israel and American Jews, the more complicated I
realize the issues are. I urge people reading these messages not to blame
the Crowne Plaza, because I suspect they are simply caught in a larger
issue.

While I'm talking, I also want to encourage all of you to go to Israel and
show your support in as many ways as you can. Especially now, Israel needs
people to visit. Birthright just sent over 10,000 college kids without a
single security incident that I'm aware of.

Am echad im lev echad.

B'shalom,
Adam

As I have watched the discussion unfold about using a guitar on Shabbat, I
have a question for Andy: Was any effort made to discuss this with the
management of the hotel before the service began? IMHO, it would be well
worthwhile to postpone services for a short time in order to clarify the
situation with the management, rather than assume that the information from
the employee was accurate and become angry.
