Here's a group percussion idea that I would use if I were to do that gig. I
would want to give the audience an experience of a "desert style" rhythm
which could be played by the audience. Do you know the song "Artsa Alinu"?
The first four notes of that rhythm reflect that middle eastern syncopation
pattern which is very evocative. (It's the same as "shabbat shalom"),1/8
note 1/4 note 1/8 note 1/4 note rest.
I would have half the audience play that rhythm on their thighs with a
drummer up front as the leader. The other half would keep time on hand
claps, perhaps led by a tambourine up front. just quarter notes. Once that
rhythm is established in two parts, then you have a great bed to support
songs like V'david, Artsa Alinu, Shabbat Shalom or something of your own
choosing.
The lyrics aren't important for a 15 minute public school performance.
Better to give them a taste of a different rhythm and sound....
