Adrian, I never thought that I wouldn't be able to go to Hava Nashira if I
ever get my act together. Wouldn't I? I have attended the Choral Festival.

I am submitting this response for Rabbi Daniel Freelander of the UAHC (with
his permission:)
As you know, the UAHC was created - and is fully funded - by those 904
Reform congregations who choose to support and build institutions of North
American Reform Jewry. As a result, all UAHC sponsored and funded programs
give absolute priority to representatives of affiliated UAHC congregations
who wish to attend. After affiliated congregations are given first crack,
individuals from non-UAHC congregations may apply. (usually after a deadline
dates.) Often a surcharge is levied on representatives from non-UAHC
congregations (for example: UAHC camps, Israel programs, Kallot, etc)
Occasionally the UAHC partners with other organizations who co-fund a
program and share the responsibility and financial risk associated with the
program. Such is the case with the Choral Festival, co-sponsored by The
Zamir Choral Foundation, Gratz College, and the UAHC.
The programs Elliot mentions have been created by the UAHC to provide
in-service training specifically for synagogue musicians serving small UAHC
congregations, hence the restrictions on who may attend. Similar
restrictions apply to the Para-Rabbinic training program, and the Outreach
fellows program, both jointly sponsored by the UAHC and HUC-JIR.
The ACC and GTM offer their own excellent conferences for all their dues
paying members, regardless of which congregations they serve. But we cannot
choose to attend an their conventions just because we're Reform Jews who are
involved with music. As non-members of the ACC, we may be allowed to attend
as guests, but we do not do so "of right."
I hope that this clarification is helpful. Strengthening our member
congregations - and those who serve them - is our mandate, our mission, and
our passion.

Eliot raises an excellent point, especially noting that Hava Nashira is,
ostensibly, a UAHC sponsored event, under the auspices of OSRUI and NFTY.
And, as the GTM/ACC is a UAHC affiliate, its members should be eligible
to
participate in the UAHC seminars. Shouldn't they?
Let's here from the folks in NY.

One thing to be aware of:
Anyone can attend Hava Nashira and the North American Jewish Choral
Festival, both of which are great learning opportunities. However, most
of the other workshops offering training to temple musicians are only open
to people who work for or are members of UAHC affiliated congregations.
As someone who belongs to the Guild of Temple Musicians, but works for
two unaffiliated congregations, I'm not eligible to attend those training
workshops. I understand that the UAHC must draw the line somewhere, and
I'm a strong advocate of affiliation in both of my congregations, for a
whole variety of reasons.
Meanwhile, I thought you should all be aware of that restriction.
B'Shalom,
Elliot
