Hand-held tape recorders are convenient, but the problem with most of them is
that the microphone is installed in the body of the apparatus -- and
therefore, it picks up as much motor noise as it does sound that you're
trying to record.
I was able to find a Sony Walkman with a separate stereo microphone that
plugs in -- so you can keep the mic away from the recorder itself and get a
better quality recording. I seem to recall it cost about $80 or $90 about 3
years ago, and I think I bought it at Radio Shack. It may not be the same
quality as a mini disc recorder (with which I'm not familiar), but is a
manageable way to get a decent recording at HN.
