[HANASHIR:7285] Re: Calling people up to the Torah

Just a correction re: gabbayut, and calling women vs. men vs.
groups/couples up to the Torah:
After v'ya-zor v'yagein, say for a:
Man: Ya'amod (and say their Hebrew name)
Woman: *Ta'amod* (Hebrew name)
2 or more men & women: Ya'amdu (Hebrew name)
2 or more women: Ta'amdu (Hebrew name)
...l'aliyah ha Rishona (if you're not in a community which Kahuna -- Cohen
stuff -- matters)

Then, as Andy mentioned, just call up the person to each aliyah after that
WITHOUT that whole paragraph, just say Ta'amod or ya'amod (or whatever) and
then their Hebrew name:
l'aliya ha...
2-Sh'niya
3-Shlishit
4-R'vi'it
5-Chamishit
6-Shishit
7-Shvi'it
and for the maftir reading, just say Maftir (without saying l'aliyah ha...)
for a man and Maftira for a woman.

The Hebrew is found in Siddur Sim Shalom on p.400 and in the Artscroll
Siddur on p. 438-440.

Another couple of exciting fun facts: during the weekday Torah service, the
wording of that paragraph is different, but whether you are calling people
up to the Torah on weekdays or Shabbat, the traditional chant/melody used
is the same, based on the High Holy Day Torah Trope.

---------------
>On Shabbat, the first aliyah is preceded by the gabbai's declaring "V'yazor
>v'yagen v'yoshia l'chol hachosim bo, v'nomar: amen. Hakol havu godel
>lElohenu utnu kavod latora.". Then, if it is a congregation where being a
>kohen matters, and the first oleh is a kohen, you say "kohen, k'rav"
>("kohen, approach").
>
>The gabbai calls "yaamod so-and-so ben so-and-so [hakohen or halevi if a
>kohen or levi]" for a man. For a woman, the form is "yamdu so-and-so...".
>It actually means "arise" or "stand", as in "amida".
>
>After calling the first honoree, the congregation declares "V'atem hadvekim
>bAdonai Elohechem, chayim kulchem hayom", and then the gabbai repeats it.
>Only the first oleh!
>
>Hope this helps.
>
>Good shabbos,
>Andy
