[HANASHIR:7096] Re: ol Yisrael

having written a song with this line as the chorus, I must jump in here and
say that while yes, modern Israeli Hebrew has changed the words from zeh
bazeh to zeh lazeh, and yes, they basically translate the same, my response
to the Israelis who come up to correct me after hearing my song is that I
chose to use the original quote from the Talmud. They usually are clueless
and once I give them the source they usually shut up. But the arrogance of
thinking that modern hebrew is necessarily an IMPROVEMENT over biblical
and/or rabbinic hebrew really irks me! so, what I'm trying to say to you,
Meris, is don't feel obligated to give in to that kind of pressure from
Israeli teachers. I also teach at a Schechter school and we have excellent
hebrew teachers, but Judaic scholars they aren't necessarily... just make
sure that you know what YOU are talking about tho if you argue! For modern
hebrew I always defer to them... but for siddur or biblical...no way.

happy singing
:) Raquel
