Just wanted to let you know that there is a good possibility that our
colleague, Steve Dropkin, may be on National TV tomorrow night. On MSNBC there
will be a two hour televised segment live from Birmingham, AL (where Steve
lives) called "Shades of Progress, Shadows of Hate". It airs Tuesday from
7-9pm EST. It is being produced by MSNBC and Newsweek and hosted by Brian
Williams of NBC News. The show will feed from the 16th St. Baptist Church in
Birmingham where 37 years ago a hate bombing killed 4 little girls. The show
will analyze race relations in the new millinnium.
Steve wrote a song based on the "Birmingham Pledge" - a document urging people
to rid themselves of hate and advocating respect and dignity. The Pledge which
has been signed by over 70,000 people including major political figures was
written by a Jewish attorney in Birmingham, James Rotch. The song Steve wrote
titled "Build A New Day" has verses based on the words from the pledge with an
original chorus. The song will be presented as a part of this gathering and
it would be great if it ended up being televised. At the very least, it will
probably be heard in the background or as a segue into or out of a commercial.
What an incredible thing this is that two Jewish people have such a hand in
calling for the elimination of hatred in our world. This is a major part of
who we are as Jews and the Birmingham Pledge is sure to become much more known
after this show airs. I am sure there will be opportunities for all of us to
add our signatures to it and perhaps Steve can let us know more about it.
So tune your TVs to MSNBC Tuesday night 7-9pm EST (6-8pm CST) and see history
being made -- perhaps including one of our own!
