[HANASHIR:6865] Re: salaries

I can't comment on how much is an appropriate salary for what you do, since
there is such a broad range... but in my "supplimentary school" experience
(1979 - 1993), the music teacher was paid on the same scale as the other
teachers but for less actual teaching time - e.g. you might teach 20 minutes
and have a 10 minute break, so you're actually teaching 40 minutes for each
hour you're paid. Also, in some cases I was paid additional money (beyond
regular salary) for performances/assemblies that the kids did. I should also
note that in my experience, Conservative congregations paid more than Reform.
 a lot more.
in recent years, I have only taught music at Jewish day schools, which is a
whole different ball game.

so, my opinion is don't expect more salary for teaching hours than "regular"
teachers receive, but do expect to be paid extra for special programs, extra
rehearsals, etc. and don't be taken advantage of...and demand time to rest
your voice between classes...and if you're lucky, have other teachers in the
room both to help with management and so they can practice what you have
taught in their own classrooms. and make them sit among the students and
sing!

my 2 cents...
