[HANASHIR:6706] Re: We Want Your CAJE Reports

Hi everyone. To open, Carol made an interesting suggestion:

<< "dinner theater"-type concerts where people eat quietly while
listening during lunch or dinner. >>

Ah, there's the rub. I have often found at CAJE that the words "quietly,"
"listening," and "audience" do not always go together. But this is another
discussion.

I have many thoughts on the topic of CAJE Evening Program but I'll limit
myself here at this time. I want to throw this question out for discussion
just to see where it leads and what your thoughts are: What is CAJE Evening
Program supposed to accomplish? (I know what I want it to do for me and my
career.) How does the general audience look upon it? I realize that CAJE is a
conference for learning, and that there are classes and workshops all day
long, and that many of us (as "professional entertainers") even lead some of
these. But, do we not provide evening entertainment for people who've been in
sessions all day long? Or, are we too supposed to play the role of teacher
even during our concerts? Yes, the label in the last couple of years has been
that of "edu-tainment," but is that what we really need to do at that point
in the evening? Can't we achieve that during daytime sessions? I know that at
other kinds of educator conferences I've been to, we've had sessions during
the day and entertainment at night, or even gone out on the town to a play or
comedy club, then back to sessions the next morning. I understand the unique
nature of CAJE and am happy, even grateful, for the opportunity to play
there. Just thought I'd like to hear some other opinions and have a healthy
dialogue.
Thanks.
