[HANASHIR:6669] Fare thee well

Dear Adrian and Hanashirites,

Since I'm not going to be at CAJE this year, I wanted to wish everyone well
and share a little bit about an upcoming trek I will begin on August 16. On
that date I will fly to Bilbao in northern Spain, then take a train to the
French border town of Roncesvalles, from where I will begin a 500 mile hike
across the north of Spain. Some of you probably know that it's called the
"Camino de Santiago" as it ends up in the city of Santiago de Compostela in
the far northwest of Spain.

This has been a catholic pilgrimmage route for the past thousand years or so,
as they believe that the remains of Saint James (Santiago) are buried there,
so since the middle ages, people from all over Europe have been making this
journey. One of the great things about it is the fact that there is a solid
infrastructure that has grown up around the route, so that one hikes for ten
miles or so and arrives in the next town where there is a bed waiting. You
can even get a special card which enables you to get the cheap "pilgrim's
rate" at all stops along the way. In this way, you don't need to carry a
tent, a stove, or anything more than a change of clothes and a sleeping bag.

Most people who hike the length of the route do so in five to six weeks, so
I'll be hiking during Elul and into the high holidays, which feels quite
appropriate. and no, I'm not turning Catholic..... this is no Woody Allen
flick. It's just that I love the idea of taking a long walking meditation,
I'm fluent in Spanish, and I'm ready for a watershed event in my life.

After the trek is over, I'm giving myself a couple of weeks to make my way
down through Portugal to fly home from Lisbon on the 10th of October.

Since I wouldn't want to deal with a thousand emails when I return, I'd like
to be taken off the list around August 15, and hopefully put back on October
10. Now Adrian, I know that you're not my personal assistant. Could you
share with the list the way that one can remove him/herself from the list.
I know that we received those instructions once upon a time, but alas, one
would have to be organized to be able to retrieve that kind of info.....

Have a great CAJE everybody.....
