university-level Biblical Hebrew course available in the area, only to find
that it will be taught from a book with transliterations alongside the
Hebrew. The teacher, who is a Christian grad. student, is not particularly
fluent in the reading of the language, although she understands the words and
is qualified to teach grammar and translation. I am giving consideration to
trying to find a Jewish scholar and studying privately. If anyone who has
studied Biblical Hebrew can share an illuminating experience which could help
me decide, I would appreciate it. This is pretty specific advice I am
seeking, so please e-mail me privately. >>

Rachelle, the University of Wisconsin Distance Learning program offers a
three-year biblical Hebrew sequence. I've taken one of the courses, myself
(Readings in Exdous and Leviticus--a third year class) and got a great deal
from it. It is a for-credit sequence and done entirely correspondence. They
have a web site with an online catalog, if you're interested. Good luck.
