Freigish mode is another name for Ahavah Rabah mode. This mode uses a an
augmented second interval. Example e-f-g# -a + b-c-d-e. It's planitve
quality makes it quite effective for use in supplicatory prayer. The mode is
very ancient and probably dates back to before the First Temple period.
Scholars surmise this from the fingering holes found in the double piped
abuv, an instrument the Talmud equates with the Chalil in Tractate Arachin
10b.
I must stress that this is only one theory about it's origin and there are
others with equal weight.
