Marsha,
Our Rabbi put out the Da Lifnei quest to the rabbinate online! Got 3
responses today!
1) verb singular--Otzar HaMidrashim Eliezar 20:18
verb plural--Barakhot 28b
Fred Davidow
2) It is based upon a statement in tractate Sanhedrin 19a, which states, "You
do not stand before us, but rather do you stand before He who spoke and the
world existed."
Micky Boyden
3) Years ago, I assumed it was Talmudic. However, after going through all of
the pre-computer concordances, the closest I found was, "Da lifnay mi ata
o-meil"!
The earliest source in a midrash found in Judah David Eisenstadt"s anthology
of ancient aphorisms, Otzar HaMidrashim, New York, 1925, page 27. The full
statement makes its placement on the Aron Hakodesh more meaningful...."My
son, when you enter the presence of your Maker, enter with fear and awe and
when you pray, know before Whom you stand."
Moshe Zemer
Interesting?!
L'Shalom,
Jill
