[HANASHIR:6225] pre-shabbat post hava nashira poem

Shalom Chaverim-v'ot,

I began this poem on the way to Hava Nashira this year and finished
it on the way home...you're all in it...Shabbat Shalom ad Chag
Sameach to everyone.

FLYING THROUGH THE HEARTLAND WITH EXPLODED PEN

Flying through the heartland
over squares of history

thinking about love
don't worry, this isn't a love poem

I am on an airplane weeping
This is unusual, as I usually don't weep

until the return trip
I may not last the weekend

I am concerned about temperatures in Chicago
I've dressed in late May Los Angeles

It isn't enough to protect me
from the storm dancing around O'hare

My pen is leaking ink at 23,000 feet
Everything has it's limits

My fingers stained blue
like they miss each other

Even my digits
are oddly sentimental

I have the flight attendants scrambling
for moist towlettes.

An hour away from Chicago,
we may have to land early

Forget the weather
there's a blue storm on my hands

We'll land in Chicago
wait in many lines

Won't see my luggage til tomorrow
Women will offer me clothes and hair gel

Will fall in love with 150 people
This is not a love poem

The next time I look at my hands
I won't remember the color blue

All the planes have landed
My luggage doesn't remember going anywhere
