[HANASHIR:6202] Re: Who Wrote, Recordings, and More

Carol:

This is a great idea. In the past, when Rick Mann and I made Hava Nashira tape
sets, we provided full attribution for all the songs on the tape, wherever
possible. It often took some doing. Also, the tapes we made rarely contained
whole pieces minutes long, but rather maybe just a verse and chorus or
two-enough to remind the listener of what he/she had learned at HN. In the same
way, simple lead line sheets with chords, rather than full blown
transcriptions, may be adequate for the purposes you suggested.

What you suggest is a pretty massive undertaking, but may be possible, with
lots of effort. Asking the faculty to have such a list prepared in advance is
pretty difficult for them. There would need to be one or several people at HN
whose sole function would be to keep track of what was sung/taught, and
verifying the attribution, name, etc.

In the interim, I recommend this list as the best resource for each of us to
help the other make such identifications. There are a number of us with
extensive libraries of recordings and music, and others with extensive
knowledge of who wrote what, etc. If one can only identify the tune by sound,
then one of the various forms of notation that have been tried on this list
might be one way, and another might be using small audio files (you can sing a
few seconds into your computer's mic and then attach it to an email-if it's a
small file-and then people can hear the tune you are referring to.)

I'd like to suggest to the HN staff that they keep track of and then print
up a list of the music presented, particularly at services and in the dining
room, by (1) title, (2) songwriter, and (3) whether and where sheet music is
available... and (4) possibly cite a recording or two as well.

As I listen to my tapes from the conference, I hear, for instance, a wealth
of songs called Halleluyah or Shiru L'Adonai or something similar. But for
those of us who learn better from sheet music, it would be very worthwhile
to be able to know how to look it up. Of course, if HN could work out the
logistics for providing the sheet music, that would be even better.

And, even where no sheet music is available, it would be good to have a way
to separately identify by songwriter all the songs with sound-alike titles
in our temple service folders or in our personal files.
